Quick answer: Good acoustic panels have little or no smell. A strong chemical smell usually comes from cheap foam or glues giving off chemicals. Choose panels tested low for formaldehyde and emissions, especially for bedrooms, preschools and offices. Our Flexi™ panels are formaldehyde safe.

Key takeaways

  • Good panels have little or no smell.
  • Strong smells come from cheap foam and glues.
  • Ask for formaldehyde and emissions papers.

What causes the smell

Chemicals from foams, binders and glues slowly leave the material. You smell them. Some, like formaldehyde, are worth avoiding indoors.

Why it matters

Bedrooms, preschools, clinics and offices are closed rooms with aircon. Whatever is in the air stays in the air. That is why low-emission materials matter most in these rooms.

What to ask for

Ask for formaldehyde and emissions test results. Our Flexi™ panels are formaldehyde safe. If a supplier cannot show any papers, treat that as a warning sign.

Smell check diagram

If a panel smells

Air the room well for a few days. If a strong smell stays, stop using that product. Ask the supplier what the panel is made of.

Glues

We fix panels mechanically or with suitable mounting systems, not with strong-smelling spray glue. Ceiling panels are always fixed mechanically, never glued. That also means no glue smell after the install.

Musty smells

A musty smell is different. It means damp. Find and fix the damp first.

Quick test

Open the box and smell it. A strong, sharp smell is a warning sign. Good panels smell of very little.

Other sources

New paint, carpets and furniture also give off smells. Air the room after any reno. If the room still smells, the panels may not be the cause.

What we see on real jobs

Bedrooms and preschools are where low-emission panels matter most. Ask to see the test papers before you decide.
