Quick answer: Lobbies are built to impress, with stone floors, glass and tall ceilings, so footsteps, luggage wheels and voices echo. Check-in and reception staff struggle to hear guests. Acoustic panels on the ceiling or upper walls, and behind the reception desk, calm the space without losing the grand look. Panels can be coloured, printed or hidden in the design.
Key takeaways
- Stone, glass and height make lobbies echo.
- Reception staff struggle to hear guests.
- Panels can blend into a grand design.
Why lobbies echo
Lobbies have hard, shiny surfaces and a big volume of air. Every footstep and suitcase wheel travels across the room. Voices at the desk get lost in the echo.
Reception first
Put panels behind and above the reception desk. Staff and guests then hear each other at a normal voice. This is the spot where clear speech matters most.

Ceiling
Hang clouds or make a feature ceiling over the waiting area. In tall lobbies, the ceiling is the biggest bare surface. Clouds keep the grand height while cutting the echo. See ceiling vs wall panels.

Design
Panels can be printed with art or brand patterns. They can be colour-matched to stone, or made in custom sizes to sit in wall frames. Guests see a design feature, not acoustic panels. See custom print panels.
Lifts and corridors
Lift lobbies and corridors are hard and narrow, so footsteps and voices echo there too. A few panels cut that echo. They do not stop noise getting into rooms, though; solid doors and seals do that.
Install
Most jobs take a few hours to 1 or 2 days. Working one section at a time can keep the lobby open. We work Monday to Saturday in working hours; night and Sunday installs are possible with a surcharge, quoted case by case.
Office lobbies too
Office lobbies have the same problem: visitors cannot hear the receptionist. The same fix works. Start with panels behind and above the reception desk.
Fire rules
Lobbies are escape routes in some buildings, with stricter rules. Our Flexi™ panels are fire safe. For fire papers and QP/PE sign-off, we coordinate with the owner’s side and third-party consultants, so start early. See fire safety for panels.
What we see on real jobs
First impressions matter. A lobby where you can hear the person at the desk feels more welcoming.
