Quick answer: An instructor mic sounds echoey when the speakers fill a hard room and the sound bounces back before it fades. Turning up the mic only makes the echo louder. The fix is to calm the room with acoustic panels opposite the speakers and on the ceiling, then turn the mic and music down. Most studio rooms need 15 to 25 panels, about S$2,775 to S$4,625 installed.
Key takeaways
- The room causes the mic echo, not the mic.
- Louder mic means louder echo.
- Panels first, then lower the volume.
Why does the mic sound so boomy?
The mic sends the voice to speakers, which push it into the room. In a room with hard walls, mirrors and a hard ceiling, that sound keeps bouncing. Each word overlaps the last, so clients hear mush. See what RT60 means.
Why does turning it up make it worse?
More volume means more sound bouncing around. The echo grows as fast as the voice does. Clients still cannot pick out words, and now it is louder and more tiring. It can also cause feedback squeals.

Where should panels go?
Start with the wall facing the speakers and the back wall, where sound bounces back to the class. Add side walls and the ceiling in big rooms. Keep panels clear of mirrors and equipment. See where to place panels first.

What settings help?
Point speakers at the class, not at bare walls. Keep the mic close to the mouth with a headset. Lower the music under the voice during cues. These help most once the room is treated.
How many panels will I need?
A typical studio gym room needs 15 to 25 panels. A big hall-style class room needs more. We work out the number from photos and the room size. See how many panels you need.
What does it cost?
At S$185 per panel installed, 15 to 25 panels cost about S$2,775 to S$4,625. Standard fixings are included; scaffold for high ceilings is quoted separately. Compare that with the cost of new speakers that may not fix the echo. See acoustic panel prices.
Is this the same in church halls?
Yes. Halls with mics have the same problem. Read our church hall echo guide for a bigger version.
Does it help instructors?
Yes. In a calmer room, instructors can speak at a normal level and still be heard. Cues stay clear at a lower mic volume. A calmer room can make speech easier to follow for everyone in class.
What we see on real jobs
New mics and speakers cannot remove room echo. Once the room is treated, an existing system often sounds fine.
