Quick answer: Climbing gyms are very tall and hard, with music and groups cheering, so they echo. Panels on the ceiling and on walls that are not climbing surfaces cut the echo, so instructors are heard and the space feels calmer. Panels must never go near holds, ropes or fall zones.
Key takeaways
- Tall, hard rooms echo a lot.
- Panels on the ceiling and non-climbing walls.
- Never near holds or fall zones.
Why climbing gyms echo
The rooms are huge and tall, and the climbing walls are hard. Floors are covered in mats only below the walls. Music, chatter and cheering all bounce around a big hard box.
Where panels go
Put panels high on the ceiling, often as hanging clouds. Add them on walls that are not used for climbing, such as reception, café and seating areas. See ceiling panels.

Safety first
Panels never go near holds, top-rope anchors or anywhere a climber could fall or swing. We plan around routes with the gym team. Ceiling panels are always fixed mechanically.

Instructors and briefings
Safety briefings and classes are easier to follow when the room is not ringing. New climbers need to hear every word. Instructors can speak at a normal level.
Access
High ceilings need a lift or scaffold to install. Scaffold is quoted separately. See high-ceiling installs.
What it costs
Panels are S$185 each installed, or about S$255 per m². Lift or scaffold access for high ceilings is added on top. The count is planned from photos and ceiling height.
What we see on real jobs
Climbing gyms have huge volumes. Clouds high up make the biggest change.
