Quick answer: So-called acoustic or soundproof paint is a thicker paint. It can dull a tiny bit of high sound, but it is far too thin to soak up voices or stop echo in a room, and it does not block noise from neighbours. If your room echoes, acoustic panels work. Paint is for colour.

Key takeaways

  • Acoustic paint is just a thick layer of paint.
  • It is far too thin to stop echo.
  • Panels soak up sound; paint does not.

What acoustic paint is

Acoustic paint is a thicker, heavier paint, sometimes with fillers. A few coats add a millimetre or so to the wall. Once dry, it is still a hard, smooth surface.

Why it cannot stop echo

To soak up sound, a material needs depth and an open, soft structure. Panels are 25 to 50 mm thick. Paint is less than 1 mm and hard when dry, so sound still bounces off. See why thickness matters.

Can it block neighbour noise?

No. Blocking sound needs heavy mass and sealed gaps, not a coat of paint. What works is sealing gaps around doors and windows, solid doors, and walls built right up to the slab. See can panels help with neighbour noise.

Never paint over panels

Painting a fabric panel fills the fabric, so sound cannot get in. The panel stops working and becomes a hard board. If you want a new colour, we can re-cover the panels in fresh fabric instead.

What actually works

Put panels on the walls nearest people, plus the ceiling in big rooms. Rugs and curtains help a little on top of that. Most rooms need panels on about 20–40% of the walls. See how to fix bad acoustics in a room.

Save your money

If you were going to spend on special paint for echo, spend it on panels in the right spots instead. In a small room, 4 to 6 panels cost about S$740 to S$1,110 installed. That money buys a change you can hear.

Other "quick fixes" that do not work

Egg cartons on the wall, thin foam stickers, glossy wall panels, and plants alone. They change the look but barely change the sound.

What a small budget can do

At S$185 per panel supplied and installed, S$555 to S$740 buys 3 to 4 panels. Supply-only starts from S$120 per panel. In a small room, placed on the walls nearest where you sit, that is often enough to notice a clear change.

What we see on real jobs

A coat of paint cannot fix echo, so we do not sell it as a fix. Panels in the right spots are the honest answer.
