Quick answer: PET felt boards are made from recycled plastic bottles pressed into felt, often only 9 to 12 mm thick. They are light, cheap and good for pinboards and decor, but thin boards only soak up the high, sharp sounds. Thicker fabric panels (25 to 50 mm) soak up voices and more bass. For real echo control, choose thicker panels; use thin felt as an extra.

Key takeaways

  • Thin PET felt (9–12 mm) catches mostly high sounds.
  • Thick fabric panels (25–50 mm) catch voices and more bass.
  • PET felt is good for pinboards and decor.

What PET felt is

PET is the plastic used for drink bottles. It is shredded, pressed into felt and cut into boards and shapes. It is light and comes in many colours, so it is popular in offices and schools.

Why thickness matters

Sound needs depth to be soaked up. Thin boards catch the "sss" and clatter, but voices and bass go through and bounce off the wall behind. A 25 or 50 mm panel gives sound room to be soaked up. See are thicker panels better.

Where PET felt works

PET felt works well for pinboards in classrooms, desk dividers and decor shapes. It helps a little with clatter and looks good. It is not enough on its own for a room that rings.

Where fabric panels work better

Meeting rooms, restaurants, churches and home studios, where you need voices to be clear. A 25 mm panel suits speech; 50 mm suits music. Both come in 39 fabric colours. See what an NRC rating means.

Check the numbers

Ask for the NRC (a score from 0 to 1 for how much sound a panel soaks up) of the exact thickness you are buying. Our Flexi™ panels are NRC 0.80 at 25 mm and 1.00 at 50 mm. A higher NRC means more sound is soaked up.

Price

Thin felt boards cost less per piece, but you may need many more of them to get the same effect. Our panels cost from S$185 each supplied and installed (50 mm, standard fixings included), about S$255 per m² on the wall. Supply-only is from S$120. See acoustic panel prices.

Thin felt with an air gap

Mounting a thin board with a gap behind it helps it catch a bit more sound than when it is stuck flat on the wall. It still will not match a thick panel, but it is a simple upgrade for decor pieces. For real echo control, a 25 mm fabric panel (NRC 0.80) or a 50 mm panel (NRC 1.00) does much more.

Using both in a school

Put felt pinboards along the lower walls for work displays. Use thicker panels higher up and on the ceiling for speech. Teachers get both a display space and a calmer room.

What we see on real jobs

Schools often have felt pinboards already. They help with clatter, but the teacher's voice still rings. We add thicker panels higher on the walls for the speech.
